The Gatineau Park Loop offers a versatile cycling experience on smooth, paved roads. Whether you have a sleek road bike, a hybrid, or even a mountain bike, you'll find the ride comfortable and enjoyable. Cyclists who prefer a more rugged adventure can also detour onto nearby gravel paths like the one leading to the fire tower. However, for those sticking to the main loop, you can expect a fun, challenging ride filled with rolling hills and serene surroundings.
One of the most beloved features of the loop is that the park goes vehicle-free several days a week, offering a peaceful environment for cyclists, roller skiers, and runners alike. From Monday to Friday (except Wednesdays), the park is closed to cars, making it the perfect time to experience the beauty of Gatineau Park without the noise and distraction of vehicles. Be sure to check the park’s website or gate notices for up-to-date closures and schedules.
Starting and ending at the Gatineau Park P3 Parking Lot, this loop is easy to access, especially if you're coming from Ottawa or the Outaouais region. For those beginning their adventure from Chelsea, a stop at the visitor center on Scott Road is highly recommended. It’s a great spot to grab a map, use the restroom, or simply get any last-minute tips from locals before hitting the road.
The loop isn’t just a scenic ride—it also packs in some decent climbs! The 481 meters of ascent and 483 meters of descent will keep you on your toes, but the reward is well worth it. The thrilling downhills offer a smooth and speedy ride back to the bottom, giving your legs a break after those tougher climbs.
Make sure to come prepared, though! There are no shops along the loop, so bring plenty of water and snacks. If you’re in need of supplies or a quick fix, Camp Fortune offers limited services, including bike repairs, tubes, and a water refill station.
If you need a break or want to grab a coffee, Chelsea is only a short detour from the loop. With plenty of bike-friendly spots and local cafés, it’s the perfect place to relax, refuel, and chat with the friendly locals who always appreciate visitors. As always, let's all do our part to leave Chelsea even better than how we found it—being kind and respectful is key to preserving its charm!
A ride through Gatineau Park wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Champlain Lookout. This iconic spot offers breathtaking views of the park and is a favorite among cyclists. Just remember, there’s no water available at the lookout, so be sure to stock up on water before you head up. Camp Fortune or Chelsea are great places to fill up before the climb!
