No appointment is required for the boutique, and self-guided farm visits are available during opening hours.
Stroll through the farm and get up close with these fascinating creatures. Alpacas are known for their soft, luxurious fleece, often called the “fiber of the gods” by the Incas. You can also visit the Alpagas Chelsea Boutique, where you'll find a selection of luxurious alpaca items and hand-knitted accessories. It's a great way to enjoy nature and pick up a unique souvenir.
Alpacas, related to llamas, are raised mainly for their soft fiber. While they don't all spit, they can, usually reserving this behavior for other alpacas but occasionally at humans. You'll hear them hum when they're curious, content, or cautious. In times of danger, they make a unique braying sound to alert the herd.
Originally from the Andes Mountains of South America, alpacas are well-suited to colder climates. They thrive in temperatures as low as -20°C without needing a heated barn. However, they're also found in warmer climates like Florida and California.
Life Expectancy: Alpacas live for 15-20 years. Females reach breeding age at 18-24 months, and males at around 24 months or older. Baby alpacas, known as crias, are born mainly between May and September in Canada to avoid the harsh winter.
Spring Grooming: May is shearing time, which helps alpacas stay cool as temperatures rise. This is also when teeth trimming, nail cutting, and vaccinations are done.
Baby Alpacas: From May to September, you might see newborn crias, who can stand and nurse within two hours of birth. These little ones weigh between 6-10 kg and are usually weaned at 5-6 months.
