Animal Tracking on Snowshoes in Chelsea: Explore Winter Wildlife - 16 Feb
Have you ever wondered what animals roam the snow-covered forests of Chelsea during the winter months? If so, Animal Tracking on Snowshoes is the perfect winter adventure for those looking to connect with nature. This guided snowshoe hike along trail 60 offers a unique opportunity to uncover the mysteries of winter wildlife, all while enjoying the crisp, fresh air and snowy landscape.

This outdoor activity, organized by the National Capital Commission, invites nature enthusiasts to step into the tracks left behind by local animals. The guides will walk participants through the different survival strategies that animals employ to withstand the harshness of winter, making for a fun and educational experience for all. As you follow the snowy trails, you’ll learn about the species that thrive in the region, from the common tracks of deer to the lesser-known marks left by smaller critters like squirrels or foxes. Along the way, the guides will also share fascinating insights into animal behavior during the colder months, and how they adapt to survive.

Whether you're a seasoned snowshoe enthusiast or a first-time adventurer, the snowshoes are provided, and the trails are open to anyone 9 years of age and older. The best part? This activity is completely free! Spaces are limited, so it’s highly recommended to make a reservation ahead of time to secure your spot. If the scheduled activities are fully booked, don’t worry—there’s always a chance to drop by the Visitor’s Centre just before the hike begins to see if any last-minute spaces have opened up due to cancellations.

Sessions run every Saturday and Sunday from January 11 to March 9, 2025, with separate groups for French and English speakers. You can choose between morning or afternoon times depending on your language preference, with the French session offered at 10:30 am on Saturdays and 1:30 pm on Sundays, and the English session available at 1:30 pm on Saturdays and 10:30 am on Sundays. Each session lasts approximately 120 minutes, so you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and immerse yourself in the wonder of winter wildlife.

If you're eager to get outside and experience winter in a whole new way, be sure to visit the Gatineau Park Visitor Centre on Scott Road in Chelsea for your adventure. Whether you’re looking to learn something new, get active, or simply enjoy the winter landscape, Animal Tracking on Snowshoes is an experience that shouldn’t be missed.
