The winter season is proving to be a real winner for outdoor enthusiasts in Chelsea, Quebec! After a week that blessed the region with over 20 cm of fresh snow, more snow is expected to fall this Sunday. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic winter season, so let’s dive into the latest conditions across local slopes and trails.
Camp Fortune continues to offer exceptional skiing conditions this winter. With 22 runs open, there’s plenty of snow and excitement to be had. The snow conditions are described as fantastic, with groomed snow over a hard-packed base. The Canadian and Chute runs are open, and come Saturday, the North American and La Cache runs will be ready for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy. For intermediate skiers, the Meech Quad lift is servicing two great runs. If you’re looking for some smooth, groomed snow, Paradise is your best bet. Meanwhile, North American is still operating under marginal natural snow conditions, though it’s open Wednesday through Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For those new to skiing or snowboarding, the Tapis/Magic Carpets at the learning center are up and running for all ages. The small carpet runs from open to close, and the larger one is available on weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Skyline Quad lift is also in action, servicing intermediate, difficult, and extremely difficult runs. Snow conditions here are similarly fantastic, with groomed snow on a hard-packed base. If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, the glades offer natural snow, but be aware that conditions vary. Skiers are advised to know their limits and, as always, ski with a buddy for safety. If the ribbon is up, the glades are closed, so make sure to respect the boundaries.
Over in Gatineau Park, the snow conditions are also looking promising. The base is firm with a light dusting of fresh snow on top. Work is underway on trail #11 near Keogan, but in general, the conditions are suitable for both classic and skate skiing. With 96% of the groomed trails in great shape, skiers are sure to find an ideal path. Back-country skiing is recommended for 85% of the total trails, so whether you’re looking for some trackset action or an off-the-beaten-path adventure, Gatineau Park has something for everyone. The snow temperature sits at a crisp -7°C, and with just under 5 cm of new snow in the past 24 hours, the conditions are continuing to improve.
For those looking for more local skiing opportunities, the Voie Verte Chelsea community trail offers excellent conditions for classic skiing. However, skate skiing is a bit tight on the checker, making it a little uncomfortable but still doable. Still, it’s a great weekend activity for those who prefer a quieter, more scenic experience.
Overall, the snow conditions in Chelsea are in great shape for a wide range of outdoor activities. Whether you’re hitting the slopes at Camp Fortune or exploring the trails in Gatineau Park, February is shaping up to be a month packed with winter adventures.
